ASEAN Summit postponed to January due to storm

Friday, December 8th, 2006

CEBU — (3RD UPDATE) THE 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, scheduled for next week in Cebu, has been postponed to January because of a strong storm bearing down on the meeting site, officials here and abroad said Friday.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor, head of the Philippine organizing committee, made the official announcement Friday in a televised news conference from Cebu province, site of the summit.

Paynor denied that the postponement was made because of the travel advisories of the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan warning of imminent terror attacks at the site of the summit.

Sinulog 2006

One Beat!
 Once Dance!

The annually anticipated Cebuano celebration called Sinulog once more unfolds before your very eyes.

The city is in frenzy… you see people flock to the Basilica Minore to pay tribute to the child God. Business is bomming — vendors of food, Cebuano delicacies, and souvenir items line the pedestrians. You got no choice but to enjoy the festivity and the chaos and revelry that comes with it.

TIPS:
- stuff your backup with something to munch and drink te whole day
- be prepared to W-A-L-K
- wear your most comfortable clothes
- a hat, sunglasses is a must
- keep you cash in check
- don’t forget to bring your camera

Human rights?

Wednesday, August 17th, 2005

I read on the news today that there’s another victim added to the list of the unsolved vigilante-style killing. People seem to be oblivious to the fact that it has reached more than 80 victims.

Is it because the victims had a criminal record? Or that we don’t believe in our justice system that we take the law into our hands. What about their rights as a human being?

Whatever the reason is, I hope this won’t set as an example to the youth that taking another’s life is okay even though he’s a criminal. We are trying to establish Cebu as the best destination in the country but with all the unsolved killings, who would want to visit, right?

Just a thought ….

State of Cebu City Address 2005

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

Mayor Tomas R. Osmeña
July 1, 2005

The Vice Mayor Michael Rama, Members of this Honorable Body…

As you know, we have been through a succession of crisis. But one of our priorities is to really focus on our local issues.

We will finally get the titles to the South Reclamation Project. We already have several serious offers from different locators. Much however remains to be done, we will be bidding out the electricity, water, telephones, interior roads. But we are now moving towards our goal. The goal that took the city 15 years to accomplish from its inception in 1989 to where we are today. The goal is to create 30,000 jobs or more and increasing the city’s assets by P15 billion pesos.

State of the Nation Address (SONA)

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

Monday, July 25, 2005

EVERY YEAR, WE MEET ON THIS DAY IN THIS GREAT HALL TO CELEBRATE DEMOCRACY AND TAKE STOCK OF THE NATION: THE COUNTRY AND ITS CONDITION; THE GOVERNMENT AND ITS PERFORMANCE; THE PEOPLE AND THEIR WELL-BEING.

OURS IS A COUNTRY DIVIDED; THE STORY OF OUR NATION IS A TALE OF TWO PHILIPPINES; ALMOST, AS IT WERE, TWO COUNTRIES UNDER THE SAME NAME.

ONE IS THE PHILIPPINES WHOSE ECONOMY, AFTER LONG YEARS OF CUMULATIVE NATIONAL ENDEAVOR, IS NOW POISED FOR TAKE OFF. THE OTHER IS THE PHILIPPINES WHOSE POLITICAL SYSTEM, AFTER EQUALLY LONG YEARS OF DEGENERATION, HAS BECOME A HINDRANCE TO PROGRESS.

Transcript of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo statement on the issue of the tape recordings

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

Mga Minamahal kong Kababayan,

For the last several weeks, the issue of the tape recordings has spun out of control. Tonight, I want to set the record straight. You deserve an explanation; from me, because you are the people I was elected to serve.

As you recall, the election canvassing process was unnecessarily slow even after the election results were already in and the votes had been counted.

I was anxious to protect my votes and during that time had conversations with many people, including a Comelec official. My intent was not to influence the outcome of the election, and it did not. As I mentioned, the election had already been decided and the votes counted. And as you remember, the outcome had been predicted by every major public opinion poll, and adjudged free, fair and decisive by international election observers, and our own Namfrel.
