Choose Your Own Title

Monday, August 29th, 2005

I learned new things the past few days. For instance, I learned that there’s a certain rhythm to follow in sawing a block of wood. Yes, you heard me right - I just mentioned about sawing a block of wood. Well, this was what I discovered when I first cut a block of wood with a good old fashioned saw: you don’t use force and force alone and you don’t try too hard. This means that you take a firm grip of the wood, a firm yet relaxed grip of the saw handle, then glide it smoothly unto the wood as if the saw is the one controlling you instead of the other way around. That’s the best way to do it.

Aside from that, I also learned the effects of painting walls. The sight of people doing it always fascinated me; but little did I know it was among the most strenuous job in the world. It was not my job to apply the first coat; my job was to cover the parts where the paint was not able to get into. And yes, that is possible with a wall not unlike the surface of the moon. I’m exaggerating a bit but I’m hoping you get my idea. I was ever wondering when I was ever going to finish, but I did it after 48 years. Dili sad tanto’ng dugay. I finally finished the job and realized that I was right about one thing: it is rewarding. I literally issued a sigh of relief. It was among my happiest sighs.

The next thing I learned was installing vinyl on the floor. I learned how to cut them (which was fairly easy), I learned how to apply the glue, I also learned that it’s a bad exercise for the knees. The hardest thing to learn was cutting vinyl for the sides and corners. After a few trials and errors, I learned how to cut them in just the right size for those tricky parts without the use of a ruler or a measuring tape. I got it better than my companions that they - allow me a bit of ego boost in here - depend on me to do the sides and corner jobs. I also did a job of applying a sort of paste to walls that are uneven. It’s what they call in the dialect, “basilya” or “nagmasilya.” It left my fingers sore.

The reason why I was doing all that is because me and two of my companions (my brother and stepfather) were trying to improve my room. With the encouragement of my aching muscles, I learned one more thing. Being a part of something big, something you did as part of a group - a group with one common goal - is more satisfying and fulfilling than pursuing a job because you want it. It is much better when there is another person, or even a group of people who share the same pursuit, who want to reach the end of that pursuit as much as you do. It is sharing the times whether good or bad, sharing aches and pains, sharing worries, all for that one goal; and alas in the end, before one such journey starts again, sharing the joy. It is like the state of being happy. One can be happy alone, but I believe one is happier when others around him are the same. Pursuing a certain course with the intent to get from it what you want is trivial. Pursuing a course with the intent to share the experience from start to end, can be the most rewarding. Now how do we find one such course? The next time we ask ourselves what it is that we really want, let’s try to ask instead where we could be more needed. Sometimes it is not what we want - it is where we are wanted. That is the only way we could be part of something bigger than ourselves. Satisfaction from that, I learned by doing what was tagged as ‘man’s job’, never ends.

Now I only have one wish before retiring for the night - I hope I have put this in the right category.

Human rights?

Wednesday, August 17th, 2005

I read on the news today that there’s another victim added to the list of the unsolved vigilante-style killing. People seem to be oblivious to the fact that it has reached more than 80 victims.

Is it because the victims had a criminal record? Or that we don’t believe in our justice system that we take the law into our hands. What about their rights as a human being?

Whatever the reason is, I hope this won’t set as an example to the youth that taking another’s life is okay even though he’s a criminal. We are trying to establish Cebu as the best destination in the country but with all the unsolved killings, who would want to visit, right?

Just a thought ….

Love is a cake …

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

Although I like chocolates, I cant say that I’m an ardent devotee. But a bite of Achocolypse cake made all the difference. By the name of it, you’ll know that its sinfully good. Its a light-textured, three layered chocolate cake (i guess) that melts in your mouth. From its appearance, you would think that its just an ordinary chocolate cake but once you have a bite … ummmmhhh … you’ll never look back again. The chocolate is so rich that at some point you feel like you’re almost intoxicated. You’d almost feel passion in every bite. For me, a slice is enough for the craving.

I wish life’s like that. With just one bite, everything else doesn’t matter …. I guess love is. ;)

Entrepreneurship 101

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

It’s not necessary to study to become an entrepreneur, but doing so will help you avoid common mistakes, shorten your learning curve or validate your assumptions.

The increasing number of people putting up their own business has pushed three schools to offer entrepreneurship in their college and graduate curriculum. The Ateneo Center for Continuing Education holds regular seminars and workshops for existing and aspiring entrepreneurs. The Asian Institute of Management is offering a master’s degree, and Mirriam College an undergraduate degree, in entrepreneurship. While it’s not necessary to go to school to learn to run a business, many entrepreneurs are finding out that it pays to study to avoid common mistakes, shorten their learning curve or validate their assumptions.

This poem is for you … thanks for the friendship … Goodbye!

The Stronger Side
by Andrea E. Holmes

I walked along the ocean,
my head bowed low in sorrow,
I hardly handled today,
how do I cope with tomorrow?

The day was like every other,
the pain the grief inside,
my strength was running out,
I could no longer hide.

The Power Of Your Actions

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd.” I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friend the following afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.

My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye.

Choose How You Start Your Day

Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, If I were any better, I would be twins!

He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and asked him, I don’t get it! You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?

How To Install Love

Monday, August 8th, 2005

Customer Service (CS) Rep. : “Yes, Ma’am, how may I help you today?”

Customer: “Well, after much consideration, I’ve decided to install LOVE. Can you guide me through the process?”

CS Rep. : “Yes, I can help you. Are you ready to proceed?”

Customer: “Well, I’m not very technical, but I think I’m ready to install now. What do I do first?”

CS Rep. : “The first step is to open your HEART. Have you located your HEART ma’am?”

Customer: “Yes I have, but there are several other programs running right now. Is it okay to install while they are running?”

CS Rep. : “What programs are running ma’am?”

Customer: “Let’s see, I have PAST-HURT.EXE, LOW ESTEEM.EXE, GRUDGE.EXE, and RESENTMENT.COM running right now.”

CS Rep. : “No problem. LOVE will gradually erase PAST-HURT.EXE from your current operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory, but it will no longer disrupt other programs. LOVE will eventually overwrite LOW-ESTEEM.EXE with a module of its own called HIGH-ESTEEM.EXE. However, you have to completely turn off GRUDGE.EXE and RESENTMENT.COM. Those programs prevent LOVE from being properly installed. Can you turn those off ma’am?”
