Cop survives murder attempt
CEBU, Philippines — A policeman had a gunshot wound while his nine-year-old niece got injured in Barangay Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City last Thursday night.
The victim was identified as Patrolman Fercival Eborlas, 47, a resident of the same barangay.
Police Master Sergeant Nicolo Gonzales, investigator of the Mambaling Police Station, told reporters that Eborlas went out for a smoke right after they had their family dinner, which was his usual routine.
While the victim was smoking outside, he was talking to some people when they noticed a gray sports utility vehicle that was passing back and forth in front of Eborlas’ home.
Gonzales added that when Eborlas’ companions went home and the policeman was left alone, a gunman disembarked from the vehicle and shot the victim several times.
Upon hearing gunshots, Eborlas’ niece went outside to check out what happened.
“Dunay lalaki nga nikanaog sa sakyanan gipusil dayon ang biktima, moduol pa unta ang gunman pero nakakita man siya nga giprotektahan sa biktima ang bata bisan pa naa siya pinusilan mao nga wala nalang siguro giduol,” Gonzales said.
At present, the authorities were still trying to communicate with the victim’s family who refused to cooperate with the investigation.
The authorities, however, said that Eborlas and his niece are now stable.
Eborlas sustained a gunshot wound to his foot, while his niece was grazed by a bullet.
Eborlas was previously assigned at the Cebu City Police Office Intelligence Branch.
He was also formerly assigned at the Cebu province and also a base policeman at the Police Regional Office-7.
Just this October, he was assigned at the Negros Oriental Provincial Office. (FREEMAN)
