Barangay clerk arrested in buy-bust
CEBU, Philippines — A female barangay clerk was nabbed by the authorities in an anti-illegal drug operation in Barangay Hipodromo, Cebu City last Wednesday evening.
The suspect was identified as Analiza Araujo Mendez, 40, who has been working as a barangay clerk in Hipodromo for a few months now.
Confiscated from her was at least P27,000 worth of suspected illegal drugs with estimated weight of five grams.
Police Major Kenneth Paul Albotra, San Nicholas Police Station chief, told The Freeman that the suspect had been under surveillance for a week already.
Albotra said that Mendez admitted that aside from trading illegal drugs, she also admitted as a user.
“Niangkon man sya nga user siya.
“Nakita guro niya nga nindot and negosyo, mao siguro nga from user na-involve siya as pusher,” he added.
Albotra said that they are yet to verify when the suspect started using illegal drugs, adding that the suspect’s area of disposal is believed to be just around the said barangay.
Furthermore, Albotra said that since the suspect is a barangay employee, they will conduct a deeper investigation regarding the case.
He added that they cannot yet verify if Mendez sells illegal drugs to her colleague at the barangay hall as this is still being investigated.
Finally, Albotra reminded the public that there is still no let-up in the campaign against illegal drugs on the part of the police.
(FREEMAN)
