CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City government is sending P10 million as initial amount of financial assistance to the victims of the 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Mindanao.

The City Council approved the initial amount yesterday upon the motion of Councilor Raymond Alvin Garcia.

“It may not be much considering the number of affected families but at the very least it can provide for the necessities that our brothers and sisters in the affected areas badly need,” said Garcia.

Garcia, in his privilege speech, urged the council to send an initial aid to the earthquake victims while waiting for the report from the assessment team, led by Councilor Dave Tumulak.

He said what the earthquake victims need are necessities such as water, food, rice, clothing, medicines, sleeping mats, tents, blankets, among others.

The financial assistance will be charged to the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office fund (CDRRMO).

The city government earlier sent Tumulak’s team to Mindanao to check the affected areas and come up with a recommendation on what assistance the city government should give.

“We cannot turn a blind eye to the situation that has befallen our brothers and sisters in Mindanao especially so when we ourselves have been the recipient of the kindness of others in our times of need during various calamities or disasters,” said Garcia.

Opposition Councilor Nestor Archival supported Garcia’s proposal and even urged for the immediate release of the funds.

Garcia said the money is already prepared and is only waiting for the go signal of Mayor Edgardo Labella.

“No one should be left to despair in situations like this especially if there are those capable of extending a helping hand. We the Filipino people have been known for our spirit of Bayanihan and this present situation is a chance to extend such to our brothers and sisters in Mindanao,” said Garcia.

The city government is expected to send more help as soon as the assessment team is back and have submitted its recommendation.  FPL (FREEMAN)
