CEBU, Philippines — Four persons suspected of being members of the New People’s Army were arrested in Negros Oriental during a joint operation by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police in Ayungon town.

The first person arrested last July 26 was Neri Boy Banggala, who was arrested in the mountainous barangay of Karul-an in Ayungon. Recovered from his house were a homemade shotgun, a magazine, two .38 cal. revolvers with live rounds, and surgical and medical equipment.

Banggala denied being a member of the NPA but instead claimed the NPAs were just his constant visitors. However, Police Regional Office-7 director, Police Brigadier General Debold Sinas, said evidence shows that Banggala was a member of the NPA and his house is where wounded rebels go for treatment.

Yesterday in Barangay Nalundan, a certain Epefanio Romano, 62, a resident of Barangay Mabato in Ayungon town, was allegedly arrested after a firefight between authorities and rebels that lasted around 20 minutes.

It was reported that the rebels withdraw and no PNP personnel were wounded.

Seized from Romano were a bandolier and various ammunition, including a rifle grenade.

Also yesterday in Sitio Yamot, Barangay Mabato, Ayungon, two men were arrested by soldier conducting a checkpoint after they were believed to be rebels fleeing from the encounter in Barangay Nalundan. The two were identified as Rico Oracoy, 39, and Lito Cadusale, 51, both residents of Sitio Yamot.

Cadusale and Oracoy are suspected to be involved in the recent killing of four policemen in the same sitio last July 18.

Recovered from the suspects were .38 cal. revolvers, a rifle grenade, and two improvised explosive devices.

The four are now detained and set to face charges.

Sinas also told the public that the deployment of 300 Special Action Force personnel to Negros Oriental is for their own security and that they will not become a threat to the island. – BRP (FREEMAN)
