CEBU, Philippines — Fewer contingents are expected for next year’s Sinulog grand parade due to the upcoming midterm elections, a Cebu City official said.

Councilor David Tumulak, Sinulog executive committee chairman, said 23 dancing contingents have signed up for the 2019 grand parade.

Three of which are out-of-town contingents, such as Placer, Masbate; Murcia, Negros Occidental; and Surigao del Norte.

The rest are from Cebu—the cities of Carcar, Toledo, Bogo and Talisay, and towns of Daanbantayan and Ginatilan— and Cebu City barangays, including Sapangdaku, San Nicolas Proper, Mambaling, Talamban, Basak San Nicolas, Mabolo, Suba, Sawang Calero, Cambinocot, Cogon Pardo, Inayawan, Bulacao, Labangon, and Guadalupe.

The multi-awarded contingent of Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe of Tangub City, Misamis Occidental backed out of the competition last Friday because they have other events to attend to.

This year, there were 27 contingents.

“We expect lesser contingents because of the upcoming local and midterm elections,” Tumulak said, adding that registration is only until December 15.

The elections are scheduled for May 13, around four months after the grand parade which is held every third Sunday of January.

No backpacks

Meanwhile, backpacks are not allowed inside the Basilica Miñore del Santo Niño and nearby areas during the novena and feast of the Holy Child next year for security purposes.

This is part of the security measures that the Philippine National Police and the city government will implement, said Tumulak, who also sits as deputy mayor for police matters and chairman of the City Council’s committee on public order and safety.

According to police, backpacks are usually used in committing crimes and terrorism.

For next year’s Sinulog novena, Tumulak said, the inspection area will be set up in front of Cebu City Hall, fronting the basilica, as not to hamper the flow of people flocking to the basilica. The novena is from January 10 to 20.

“Ari na diri (Cebu City Hall grounds) ang checking of bags, frisking or whatever security procedures, few meters away from the main entrance of the basilica. Aron hassle-free ig sulod sa simbahan,” he said. (FREEMAN)
