Bacolod City Rep. Monico Puentevella extrolled Cebu as the most organized host, even as Cebu SEA Games Organizing Committee (CebuSOC) chairman Jonathan Guardo predicts Cebu will contribute 20 gold medals to the Philippine team, which is eyeing no less than the overall championship title in the 23rd editon of the biennial sports conclave.
Speaking during the grand and elaborate CebuSOC launching yesterday at the Capitol Social Hall, Puentevella said the preparations made by CebuSOC is way ahead of the preparations made by Metro Manila, which is the main hub of the multi-event conclave.
The were some Thai sports officials, who were in Cebu the other day, and they said they can already feel the spirit of the SEA Games here and also in Bacolod City but not yet in Manila,” said Puentevella.
This, Puentevella said, is because of the efforts of the local government units led by Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia and mayors Tomas Osmena of Cebu City, Teddy Ouano of Mandaue City and Ramon “Nito” Durano of Danao City.
…. Puentevella also did not fail to recognize the efforts of sports coordinators Guardo of Cebu City, Cheryl Ouano of Mandaue City, Councilor Boying Rodriguez of Danao City and Paolo Garcia of Cebu Province, who are leading the tasks in CebuSOC.
On the other hand, Guardo made a conservative estimate that Cebu will be contributing around 20 gold medals for the Philippine Team in the SEA Games later this year.
The Philippine team is targeting to get 120 gold medals in order to grab the overall championship title over 10 other countries in the Southeast Asian region.
Guardo is confident that the six events that Cebu will be hosting can get 20 gold medals, especially with the support of the Cebuanos.
The six events are pencak silat at the Cebu Coliseum, sepak takraw at the University of San Carlos gym, dancesport at Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, mountainbike in Danao City and judo and karatedo at the Mandaue City Sports Complex.
…. Chairman Buth Ramirez of the Philippine Sports Commission is confident that Cebu can give an excellent hosting of the SEA Games, saying Cebuanons are equipped with a “strong heart†and “strong mind†that can hurdle any kinds of obstacles.
Chairman Buth Ramirez of the Philippine Sports Commission is confident that Cebu can give an excellent hosting of the SEA Games, saying Cebuanons are equipped with a “strong heart†and “strong mind†that can hurdle any kinds of obstacles.
Ramirez likened the heart of the Cebuanos to the heart of Lapu-lapu, who successfully defended the Philippine lands against foreign invaders.
Ramirez also pointed out sports as one of the unifying factors as he called on the Filipinos to unite for the sake of the country.
He told of a story about a 9-year old gymnast he met at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Ramirez asked the girl why she is training hard in gymnastics and he was taken aback by the answer of the girl.
…. “Ginagawa namin ito para sa bayan (We are doing this for the country)†was the answer of the girl, teary-eyed.
This Ramirez urged all Filipinos to dedicate all their efforts to the country.
“Para sa Pilipinas, laban ‘tang tanan (For the Philippines, we will all fight!),†Ramirez said.
The centerpiece of yesterday’s affair was the turnover of the P10 million financial assistant from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for Cebu’s hosting of six events in the 11-nation athletic meet.
The check was handed out by Bacolod City Rep. Monico Puentevella along with Philippine Sports Commission chairman William “Butch†Ramirez and commissioner Ritchie Garcia to Governor Gwendolyn Garcia on behalf of the CebuSOC. – with Caecent O. No-ot
